We seem to be building up a fair array of spinners-

Chawla-who has to be first choice
Schofield-did well in limited overs last season-must be a regular in that form.
Batty-new signing, so they must plan on using him extensively.
Rory Hamilton-Brown-getting ahead, but seems a probable signing and as Captain will expect to play in all forms regularly.
King-very promising, but seems very little prospect of forcing his way into the team
Usman Afzal-a useful...

New points system

Good news that the points system is being revised for championship matches, which should encourage positive cricket with a wider margin between win and draw points. I am less sure of the benefit of only 110 overs for bonus points. This puts pressure on teams to score quickly rather than build an innings. If the championship is a preparation for test cricket batsmen need to learn to bat for the long haul rather than as they have to in the one day game.

May as well start a new thread about this ongoing story. The rumours were correct regarding his approach.

I can understand Sussex fans not being happy but what on earth have Surrey done wrong? This is NOT an illegal approach - Surrey have asked Sussex permission to speak with RHB with a view to offering him a deal. Sussex fans are over-reacting massively over this and saying it is a disgrace etc etc - join the real world please - these approaches happen all the time in the business...

T20 overseas?

Sky Sports news reporting that Irfan Pathan has been dropped by India.

"left-arm seamer Irfan Pathan has been dropped entirely from the list after falling out of favour with the national selectors."

I hope Surrey are looking at him as a potential T20 signing.

I have just seen the 2010 fixture list and it is a disgrace. Any working members are hardly going to e the four day game as most start on a Monday or Tuesday. Only 3 start on a Thursday or Saturday, then the seven weeks of June and July devoted to T20, only one county game played then. Also it looks like many home four day games will not be played at the Oval, as on the list they still have venue to be confirmed against them.
It would seem the ECB and Surrey arer getting their way in...

Are 'youngsters' getting older?

It has been on my mind for some time so I thought I would share thoughts with board members. 'Youngsters' making their debut in the first team CC matches seem to be getting older. If you look at some of the people currently at Surrey and at what age they made their first appearances in the CC you will find:

Adams - 18, Salisbury - 19, Thorpe - 19, Stewart - 18 and Ramprakash -18. These are just given as examples and I am sure that many more could be found.

Very sorry to see JB go,of all the departures he is the only one I regret seeing go. I think he could have done a good job for us as Championship opener ,he will leave a big hole,who will fill it? Other players whose contracts are up

Tudor signed a 1-year deal at the end of the 2008 season so presumably he's gone
Pedro Collins signed a 2-year Kolpak deal in 2007 so presumably he's gone too.
I think Schofield's contract is also up at the end of 2009, as is Tim Linley's and Gary Wilson's. I think Simon King may also be out of contract too.

Those contracted until 2010 are Jon Batty, Derbach, Arun Harinath, Spriegel, Meaker, Newman, Evans, Brown and Afzaal.
Those here until 2011...
